Gin Rin Showa

Nishikigoi Identification Guide

Explore the Gin Rin Showa, a powerful tricolor koi with a black base and brilliant sparkling scales. A true masterpiece of koi breeding.

The Gin Rin Showa is a variety that exudes power, drama, and opulence. It combines the heavy, tricolor intensity of the Showa Sanshoku with the radiant sparkle of Gin Rin scales. The result is a koi that feels incredibly substantial, with its bold blocks of black (Sumi), red (Hi), and white (Shiroji) further enhanced by a reflective glitter that dances across its back. In a high-quality koi, the Gin Rin scales are particularly striking when they overlay the deep black Sumi, as the contrast between the dark pigment and the bright reflections creates a depth and "3D" effect that is unique to this variety. It is a koi that demands a large pond to truly appreciate its massive presence.

Maintaining the standards of a Showa while incorporating Gin Rin is an exceptionally complex task for breeders. The Showa is known for its "wrapping" Sumi and its characteristic black head markings, such as Menware or Hachiware. When you add the requirement for consistent, high-quality Gin Rin scales, the pool of truly exceptional fish becomes much smaller. The sparkle must be uniform across the body, typically following the rows of scales from the shoulder to the tail. If the Gin Rin is patchy or only present in small clusters, it is considered a significant fault that detracts from the overall impact.

The visual appeal of a Gin Rin Showa is at its peak when the koi is viewed under direct sunlight or high-quality pond lighting, where the "sparkle" effect is most pronounced. The black base provides a perfect canvas for the reflective scales, making them pop shining gold over the red and silver over the white. As the Showa matures and its Sumi stabilizes and thickens, the Gin Rin effect can change, sometimes becoming even more integrated into the overall look. For many hobbyists, the Gin Rin Showa represents the pinnacle of modern koi breeding, offering a level of visual complexity and "wow factor" that few other varieties can match in competitive shows.

Keeping Gin Rin Showa koi in Southern California

The black (sumi) on these koi can change from season to season. Water temperature, water hardness and minerals all play a part, and a shift in sumi is normal rather than a sign of illness.

Sources disagree on how much sumi moves. One breeder describes true sumi as "stable for the most part", while a Japanese koi-supplement maker says harder water brings sumi out.

The white areas on Shiro Utsuri, Showa and Shiro Bekko carry the same sun risk as Kohaku white skin, so give them partial shade in summer.

Summer care for every koi in SoCal
  • Warm water holds less oxygen, yet koi need more oxygen as the water warms. That makes summer the season when oxygen runs shortest.
  • Oxygen is usually lowest around dawn, because plants and algae use it up overnight. In summer, keep air stones, waterfalls or fountains running day and night.
  • When oxygen runs short, large fish are often the first affected. The bigger and faster-growing your koi, the more aeration matters.
  • Published "ideal" ranges vary between sources, from about 59–77°F to 68–78°F. Most sources treat the low-to-mid 80s °F as the point where you should cut feeding, add shade and add aeration.
  • At about 82°F and above, feed less than usual. Koi can lose their appetite at 86°F and above, so offer small amounts of an easily digested food and remove anything left uneaten.
  • Shade part of the pond, but not all of it, from the afternoon sun. A shade sail, pergola or floating plants will do. Don't enclose the surface so tightly that air can't move over it.
  • Inland SoCal is much hotter than the coast. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give an average July–August afternoon high of about 95–97°F in Riverside, 83–85°F in Santa Ana and 75–77°F at LAX (air temperature). Inland ponds therefore need the heat measures above sooner and for longer.
