Shusui

Nishikigoi Identification Guide

Explore Shusui Koi, the striking Doitsu (German-mirror) version of the Asagi, known for its bold blue dorsal scales and vibrant red patterns.

The Shusui represents a revolutionary moment in the history of koi breeding, marking the first successful cross between the traditional Japanese Asagi and the German Mirror Carp (Doitsugoi). Created in Tokyo by Kichigoro Akiyama (English sources often give Yoshigoro) in the early 20th century, the Shusui is essentially the Doitsu (German-mirror) version of the Asagi — replacing the Asagi's full net of scales with rows of enlarged blue-grey scales along the back — but this description hardly does justice to its unique visual impact. Instead of the full coat of reticulated scales, the Shusui features a smooth, skin-like texture with rows of large, dark blue scales along the center of the back, ideally two and up to four. This 'zipper' of scales is the hallmark of the variety and must be perfectly aligned and symmetrical for the fish to be considered high quality. The body of the Shusui is typically a pale, powdery blue, which provides a striking canvas for the bright red 'Hi' markings that wrap around the belly and sides. Because the fish lacks most scales, the colors appear more saturated and vivid than on their Asagi counterparts. According to the All Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association, the name 'Shusui' takes one character from its creator's name and refers to the fish's blue body color. The challenge in breeding Shusui lies in maintaining the clarity of the blue skin; any dark spots or 'shimi' can easily ruin the clean aesthetic. Additionally, the red pattern should ideally be balanced on both sides of the body, often creeping up toward the dorsal scales but never quite touching them. The Shusui's sleek, aerodynamic look makes it a favorite for modern hobbyists who appreciate bold, clean lines and dramatic contrast. It is a testament to the ingenuity of early breeders who saw the potential in combining European genetics with Japanese artistry to create a koi that looks like a living, swimming painting.

Keeping Shusui koi in Southern California

Shusui are scaleless (doitsu). A breeder's documented sunburn case found no extra risk for scaleless fish over scaled fish, and the key risk factor was non-metallic white skin.

Asagi, Shusui and Koromo need the same summer oxygen, shade and feeding care as every other koi (see below).

Summer care for every koi in SoCal
  • Warm water holds less oxygen, yet koi need more oxygen as the water warms. That makes summer the season when oxygen runs shortest.
  • Oxygen is usually lowest around dawn, because plants and algae use it up overnight. In summer, keep air stones, waterfalls or fountains running day and night.
  • When oxygen runs short, large fish are often the first affected. The bigger and faster-growing your koi, the more aeration matters.
  • Published "ideal" ranges vary between sources, from about 59–77°F to 68–78°F. Most sources treat the low-to-mid 80s °F as the point where you should cut feeding, add shade and add aeration.
  • At about 82°F and above, feed less than usual. Koi can lose their appetite at 86°F and above, so offer small amounts of an easily digested food and remove anything left uneaten.
  • Shade part of the pond, but not all of it, from the afternoon sun. A shade sail, pergola or floating plants will do. Don't enclose the surface so tightly that air can't move over it.
  • Inland SoCal is much hotter than the coast. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give an average July–August afternoon high of about 95–97°F in Riverside, 83–85°F in Santa Ana and 75–77°F at LAX (air temperature). Inland ponds therefore need the heat measures above sooner and for longer.
