Platinum Ogon

Nishikigoi Identification Guide

Explore the Platinum Ogon, a brilliant metallic white koi that shines like silver. Discover why this variety is a favorite for pond enthusiasts.

The Platinum Ogon, also known as Purachina Ogon, is a breathtaking variety of Nishikigoi that exudes elegance and purity. It is a metallic, solid-white koi that appears to be made of polished silver or platinum. This variety was produced from the Ogon line by crossing a Nezu Ogon with a Kigoi, giving a pristine, snowy-white metallic finish. The result is a fish that provides a striking contrast against the dark background of a pond and the vibrant colors of other koi varieties.

The most critical attribute of a Platinum Ogon is the quality of its 'Hikari,' or metallic sheen. The entire body should glow with a consistent, mirror-like luster. The white skin (Shiroji) underneath the metallic layer must be exceptionally pure; any hint of yellowing or 'shimi' (small black specks) is considered a significant flaw. A high-quality koi will have a clear, luminous head and fins that are just as metallic as the rest of the body. The pectoral fins, in particular, should be solidly metallic and bright all the way to the base.

Collectors prize the Platinum Ogon for its ability to brighten a pond. Because of its reflective nature, it is often the most visible fish, even on overcast days or in deep water. It serves as a perfect 'lighting' fish, enhancing the visual appeal of the entire collection. Beyond its looks, the Platinum Ogon is typically a hardy and fast-growing fish, often reaching impressive sizes with a thick, powerful body. When viewing a champion-grade Platinum Ogon, one is struck by the seamless integration of its metallic armor and its graceful movement. It remains one of the most popular varieties for both beginners and advanced hobbyists who appreciate the beauty of a single, perfectly executed color.

Keeping Platinum Ogon koi in Southern California

In one breeder's documented sunburn case, only non-metallic white fish developed sun rash. That suggests metallic skin is less prone to it, though there is no controlled study.

One US breeder says Ogon do best at about 55–80°F and can tolerate up to 85°F for short periods. On inland SoCal summer days, shade and aeration are what keep the pond near that range.

Ogon can grow to 24–36 inches, so the oxygen advice for large koi applies to them (see below).

Summer care for every koi in SoCal
  • Warm water holds less oxygen, yet koi need more oxygen as the water warms. That makes summer the season when oxygen runs shortest.
  • Oxygen is usually lowest around dawn, because plants and algae use it up overnight. In summer, keep air stones, waterfalls or fountains running day and night.
  • When oxygen runs short, large fish are often the first affected. The bigger and faster-growing your koi, the more aeration matters.
  • Published "ideal" ranges vary between sources, from about 59–77°F to 68–78°F. Most sources treat the low-to-mid 80s °F as the point where you should cut feeding, add shade and add aeration.
  • At about 82°F and above, feed less than usual. Koi can lose their appetite at 86°F and above, so offer small amounts of an easily digested food and remove anything left uneaten.
  • Shade part of the pond, but not all of it, from the afternoon sun. A shade sail, pergola or floating plants will do. Don't enclose the surface so tightly that air can't move over it.
  • Inland SoCal is much hotter than the coast. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give an average July–August afternoon high of about 95–97°F in Riverside, 83–85°F in Santa Ana and 75–77°F at LAX (air temperature). Inland ponds therefore need the heat measures above sooner and for longer.
