Lemon Hariwake

Nishikigoi Identification Guide

Lemon Hariwake is a rare and beautiful metallic koi featuring bright yellow markings on a platinum base. Explore this refreshing variety.

The Lemon Hariwake is a specific and highly prized sub-variety of the Hariwake, characterized by its stunning metallic yellow markings on a shimmering platinum white base. The yellow is often described as 'lemon' because of its bright, cool, and crisp tone, which differs from the deeper gold of a Yamabuki Ogon or the warm orange of an Orenji Hariwake. Hariwake are widely available, but examples of this quality are hard to find, making a fine Lemon Hariwake a true treasure for any koi collector.

The beauty of a Lemon Hariwake lies in the purity of its colors. The platinum base should be as white as possible, with a mirror-like metallic finish. The lemon-yellow markings should be vibrant and clear, providing a sharp contrast against the white. It is essential that the yellow does not lean towards orange or appear 'muddy.' The distribution of the pattern should be balanced, ideally following the stepped patterns (Danmono) or sweeping flows (Omoyo) seen in Gosanke. The metallic luster must be consistent across both colors, ensuring the fish glows uniformly from head to tail. A clear, metallic head with a well-centered yellow mark is particularly desirable, as it enhances the fish's facial expression.

Lemon Hariwake are known for their bright and airy appearance, which brings a sense of freshness to a pond. They are often very active and visible, as the light yellow and white colors reflect sunlight beautifully. Like other Hariwake, they are generally hardy and have a pleasant temperament. Buyers should know that the yellow of a Lemon Hariwake almost always becomes lighter as the fish nears maturity — this is normal for the variety, not a sign of weak genetics. A fish that keeps a deep lemon color with high-quality Hikari is a mark of a superior breeder. This variety is a perfect choice for those who want a koi that combines the elegance of the Hariwake pattern with a unique and refreshing color palette.

Keeping Lemon Hariwake koi in Southern California

In one breeder's documented sunburn case, only non-metallic white fish developed sun rash. That suggests metallic skin is less prone to it, though there is no controlled study.

Summer care for every koi in SoCal
  • Warm water holds less oxygen, yet koi need more oxygen as the water warms. That makes summer the season when oxygen runs shortest.
  • Oxygen is usually lowest around dawn, because plants and algae use it up overnight. In summer, keep air stones, waterfalls or fountains running day and night.
  • When oxygen runs short, large fish are often the first affected. The bigger and faster-growing your koi, the more aeration matters.
  • Published "ideal" ranges vary between sources, from about 59–77°F to 68–78°F. Most sources treat the low-to-mid 80s °F as the point where you should cut feeding, add shade and add aeration.
  • At about 82°F and above, feed less than usual. Koi can lose their appetite at 86°F and above, so offer small amounts of an easily digested food and remove anything left uneaten.
  • Shade part of the pond, but not all of it, from the afternoon sun. A shade sail, pergola or floating plants will do. Don't enclose the surface so tightly that air can't move over it.
  • Inland SoCal is much hotter than the coast. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give an average July–August afternoon high of about 95–97°F in Riverside, 83–85°F in Santa Ana and 75–77°F at LAX (air temperature). Inland ponds therefore need the heat measures above sooner and for longer.
