Hariwake

Nishikigoi Identification Guide

Hariwake koi are elegant two-colored metallic fish with a platinum base and orange or yellow markings. Discover their beauty and traits.

The Hariwake is a classic and elegant variety within the Hikari Moyomono group, known for its beautiful two-color metallic pattern. It features a solid metallic white or platinum base adorned with vibrant metallic orange or yellow markings. The name 'Hariwake' refers to the 'split' or 'divided' nature of the pattern. Its metallic sheen covers both colors. (It is not the metallic version of a Kohaku — that variety is the Platinum Kohaku.) This variety is celebrated for its clean lines and its bright, cheerful presence.

In a top-tier Hariwake, the platinum base must be snowy and highly reflective, while the colored markings—whether orange or yellow—should be deep, consistent, and well-balanced across the body. The 'Hikari' or luster is paramount; both the white and the colored sections must glow with equal intensity. The edges of the pattern should be sharp and clean, creating a crisp distinction between the two metallic hues. A common challenge in Hariwake is maintaining a clear head; ideally, the head should be mostly metallic white with well-placed colored markings that do not overwhelm the face. The fins should also be metallic, often appearing white or carrying a portion of the body's color at the base.

Hariwake are favored by hobbyists for their visibility and their graceful aesthetic. They tend to be peaceful and active koi that grow well in most pond environments. There are several sub-varieties of Hariwake, including the Lemon Hariwake (with yellow markings) and the Orenji Hariwake (with orange markings), as well as Doitsu versions (a Doitsu Hariwake with an orange or red pattern is almost always called Kikusui). Regardless of the specific color, a high-quality Hariwake offers a sense of refined beauty. Its two-tone metallic shimmer creates a mesmerizing effect as it turns in the light, making it a focal point of any collection. It is a variety that emphasizes balance and clarity, proving that even a simple two-color pattern can be elevated to extraordinary levels through the introduction of metallic luster.

Keeping Hariwake koi in Southern California

In one breeder's documented sunburn case, only non-metallic white fish developed sun rash. That suggests metallic skin is less prone to it, though there is no controlled study.

Summer care for every koi in SoCal
  • Warm water holds less oxygen, yet koi need more oxygen as the water warms. That makes summer the season when oxygen runs shortest.
  • Oxygen is usually lowest around dawn, because plants and algae use it up overnight. In summer, keep air stones, waterfalls or fountains running day and night.
  • When oxygen runs short, large fish are often the first affected. The bigger and faster-growing your koi, the more aeration matters.
  • Published "ideal" ranges vary between sources, from about 59–77°F to 68–78°F. Most sources treat the low-to-mid 80s °F as the point where you should cut feeding, add shade and add aeration.
  • At about 82°F and above, feed less than usual. Koi can lose their appetite at 86°F and above, so offer small amounts of an easily digested food and remove anything left uneaten.
  • Shade part of the pond, but not all of it, from the afternoon sun. A shade sail, pergola or floating plants will do. Don't enclose the surface so tightly that air can't move over it.
  • Inland SoCal is much hotter than the coast. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give an average July–August afternoon high of about 95–97°F in Riverside, 83–85°F in Santa Ana and 75–77°F at LAX (air temperature). Inland ponds therefore need the heat measures above sooner and for longer.
