Gin Rin Karashigoi

Nishikigoi Identification Guide

Discover the Gin Rin Karashigoi, a fast-growing mustard-colored koi with a golden sparkle and a friendly disposition.

The Gin Rin Karashigoi is a relatively modern favorite that has taken the koi world by storm in recent decades. "Karashi" means mustard in Japanese, which describes the unique yellow-to-pale-orange hue of this variety. It is a cross between a Kigoi and a Chagoi, inheriting the bright, sunny color of the former and the massive growth potential and friendly nature of the latter. When this variety is blessed with Gin Rin scales, it becomes a literal golden bar in the water, shimmering with an intensity that is impossible to ignore even from a distance.

The Gin Rin Karashigoi is highly prized for its "jumbo" potential. These fish are known for their incredible growth rates and their ability to grow very large under the right conditions (one-meter fish exist but are rare, record-class specimens). The Gin Rin scales on a large Karashigoi are a sight to behold; as the fish grows, the scales become larger and the reflective surface area increases, creating a massive, sparkling presence. The color can range from a light lemon yellow to a deep, spicy mustard, and the Gin Rin scales often take on a golden sheen that complements the base color perfectly, making the fish look like it is gilded.

Like the Soragoi and Chagoi, the Karashigoi is exceptionally tame and easy to train. They are very easy to hand-feed and often lead the "pack" during feeding time, encouraging more skittish varieties to come to the surface. For a hobbyist, a Gin Rin Karashigoi offers the best of both worlds: a fish that is visually spectacular and incredibly rewarding to interact with on a daily basis. The key to a great Gin Rin Karashigoi is the absolute uniformity of the color and the consistency of the Gin Rin sparkle. Any dark spots or unevenness in the yellow can be a significant distraction. A clean, brightly colored Gin Rin Karashigoi is a true powerhouse in any pond.

Keeping Gin Rin Karashigoi koi in Southern California

Chagoi grow quickly and can pass 36 inches, and big fish are often the first affected when oxygen runs low. Strong, round-the-clock aeration matters most for large koi in a SoCal summer.

Summer is the main growing season, but every meal adds waste and uses oxygen. In very warm water, feed less rather than more.

Summer care for every koi in SoCal
  • Warm water holds less oxygen, yet koi need more oxygen as the water warms. That makes summer the season when oxygen runs shortest.
  • Oxygen is usually lowest around dawn, because plants and algae use it up overnight. In summer, keep air stones, waterfalls or fountains running day and night.
  • When oxygen runs short, large fish are often the first affected. The bigger and faster-growing your koi, the more aeration matters.
  • Published "ideal" ranges vary between sources, from about 59–77°F to 68–78°F. Most sources treat the low-to-mid 80s °F as the point where you should cut feeding, add shade and add aeration.
  • At about 82°F and above, feed less than usual. Koi can lose their appetite at 86°F and above, so offer small amounts of an easily digested food and remove anything left uneaten.
  • Shade part of the pond, but not all of it, from the afternoon sun. A shade sail, pergola or floating plants will do. Don't enclose the surface so tightly that air can't move over it.
  • Inland SoCal is much hotter than the coast. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give an average July–August afternoon high of about 95–97°F in Riverside, 83–85°F in Santa Ana and 75–77°F at LAX (air temperature). Inland ponds therefore need the heat measures above sooner and for longer.
