As a stunning variety of ornamental carp, the Showa Koi is highly prized for its striking and bold coloration, which sets it apart from other Koi varieties. Named after the Showa period in Japan (1926-1989), during which the breed was developed, the Showa Koi features a distinctive pattern of black, red, and white markings on its body. What makes the Showa Koi unique is its dynamic and eye-catching coloration. Unlike the Kohaku Koi, which primarily features red and white patterns, the Showa Koi introduces black into the mix, creating a dramatic contrast that adds depth and intensity to its appearance. The black markings, known as “sumi,” can range from solid patches to intricate patterns, creating a visually captivating canvas against which the vibrant red and white colors stand out. The balanced interplay of colors on the Showa Koi represents harmony and unity, reflecting the principles of yin and yang.
